Fall foliage season
Late September into mid-October is the busiest stretch of the year. The
drives are spectacular and the roads are correspondingly full - start
early in the day, allow longer than the map suggests, and book your
rental well ahead, because vehicles go quickly.
Winter and shoulder season
Snow is normal here well into spring, and higher routes can close or
become difficult with little warning. Some seasonal roads, including the
Mount Washington Auto Road, do not operate in winter. Check conditions
the morning you travel rather than the night before.
Fuel and service gaps
Scenic routes through the notches - the Kancamagus Highway especially -
run for long stretches with no fuel, food, or reliable cell signal. Fill
up in town before you start, and download your map for offline use.
Choosing the right vehicle
A sedan handles the main roads comfortably in fair weather. If you are
travelling in winter, carrying a family and luggage, or heading for
trailheads on unpaved access roads, an SUV is the safer choice. See the
full fleet for what is available.
